Ian Mills – Shooting in Cape Town

Artify Aircon unit video commercial

Sometimes I realize how lucky I am, the work that I have achieved and the amazing people that I have had the chance to work with.

Once again I was given the opportunity to work in Cape Town. It was over 15 years ago now when I first came to shoot “Muller Life”; a commercial still remembered today. Cape Town has to be one of the best locations in the world, such a creative a pond of exiting people and the weather is amazing.

I have the most beautiful view of Table Mountain from my room at the Taj…It’s just one of those jobs.

My great friend and Director, the Incredible Harvey B Brown, whom I have worked with over the last 20 years, either as a dancer or as a choreographer kindly demanded me on the shoot. (Yeah go, Harvey!).

Going back in time, our first job together was myself and Louis Spence dancing in a huge sparkly commercial for Moschino. Anyway, this one was very different – a wonderful cast of very talented dancers most from the Bovine Ballet based in Cape Town, plus a hand full of other talented dancers. This gave the commercial a technical edge whilst still keeping the humour.

As we all know without great dancers, us choreographers are nothing, so big thanks to all performers for working so hard. This shoot has a very special place in my heart as the production company Silver Lining treated both Harvey and myself like stars and since this time we have remained friends.

So to Rennier, Jenny, Willem and Dylanne who also worked as my casting assistant…many, many thanks.

Oh, did I mention that I was also the casting director? – so wonderful to get the chance to have an input from early on in the process!

One thing I remember well…

Harvey asks “Mills! What you gonna do here?”

I replied with “She walks on and is Gorg for 8”

Hate to say but, I stole the line from the incredible Lez Child.

So for the next week we have been Gorg for 8, rest for 4 and then gorg for 16. I think that it works well. Anyway here is the commercial…

Enjoy and please let us know what you think.
